Beijing Haoyuan Courtyard Hotel – the name ‘Haoyuan Hotel’ would translate literally to ‘good garden hotel’, and it certainly is that. The Haoyuan Hotel is a hotel on the lines of the most traditional Beijing residence – the siheyuan courtyard.

The hotel building is in traditional north Chinese style, tapered roofs of grey slate, elegant stone carvings and beautiful red columns and woodwork. Courtyard hotels are distinctively Chinese havens of tranquil charm.

As the sun goes down in the evening you’ll feel that it could be any century in the last 2,000 years – but it could only be China.

The location is fairly central, in Beijing’s Dongcheng district, about 20-30 minutes East of the Forbidden City on foot, less to Wangfujing shopping centre.

The hotel boasts a number of former celebrity residents – among them Cherie Blair, wife of the UK Prime Minister. The hotel only has 17 rooms, book as far as possible in advance. The rooms are decked out in very traditional Chinese fashion – dark wood and red lanterns.
